"A good worker gives the company a good name within the community."

Rain or shine, essential workers leave their houses every day to perform duties that are often overlooked yet invaluable for the well-being of our communities. In the waste disposal industry, particularly, the indispensable work executed by thousands of people is not always visible to the customer’s eyes. However, there’s a whole world that unfolds after your residential waste has been picked up and, in this world, workers like Juan Medina, a WM’s roll-off driver, are out there making sure that every inch of wasted material reaches its destination.

As a roll-off driver in Salinas, Cal., Medina handles waste from residential and commercial facilities for proper disposal at the landfills. Without him and his peers, solid waste would pile up in inappropriate areas, contaminating the environment and impacting everyone’s life. Although his job is physically demanding — up and down heavy-duty trucks, hauling and complying with all waste transportation regulations — Medina knows that his daily efforts aren’t only about providing a stable income for his family. He’s out there positively impacting the communities he serves and paving the path toward a more sustainable future for generations to come.

“A good worker is important for the company to grow in every aspect. A good worker gives the company a good name within the community and the cities we serve. A responsible worker is very important,” Medina asserts.

The Hard Work That Pays Off

Juan Medina joined WM in 1996. Since then, he has kept a flawless safety record, which made him the perfect nominee for the Driver of the Year award. Although he was surprised by the endorsement of his hard work, his peers could see his win from a mile away. “I’ve known Juan for 21 years. He’s always on time, always volunteers, and always there to help the other guys out,” revealed John Petri, Route Manager for Monterey County.

The consistency of his work and the senior guidance he provides for the new generation of drivers gained both local and national attention. After all, being safe, on time, and always dedicated to providing quality service for over 27 years isn’t a small feat. Shortly after his nomination, Medina won the California-Nevada area and the enterprise-wide Driver of the Year categories, outperforming thousands of drivers. “To be recognized, especially at this level, is really rewarding. It was great for Juan to be picked. He deserves it,” commented Petri.

Medina’s victory highlights a lifelong commitment to excellence even when, apparently, nobody is watching. His unwavering work ethic will leave a strong mark on WM’s history and inspire many, especially his kids. “When I read the news to them, they screamed of joy. They were glad and said to me what a great achievement it was. Also, my kids told me that what I’d achieved was a tough act to follow. I replied to them: ‘You can do it too if you want,’” he concludes.
