Altamont In The Community

The Altamont Landfill is a vital resource to our immediate neighbors and the community at large. Annually, the landfill generates millions of dollars in fees to support Alameda County recycling programs and local open space and community arts programs.

Our facility also serves as a classroom. The Alameda County National Resource Conservation Service along with federal and state officials use the site to train staff in protected species wildlife-sampling methods. School fieldtrips help students learn first hand about the importance of recycling at home and the roles landfills play in managing waste.

The National Geographic Channel documentary “Explorer: Bill Nye’s Global Meltdown” was filmed at Altamont Landfill, highlighting our facility’s sustainable energy practices. Altamont has also served as a stage for the popular Mythbusters program, who filmed a number of episodes at the landfill.

The Altamont Landfill staff meets regularly with an independent Community Monitoring Committee. The Committee along with the Local Enforcement Agency reviews the landfill’s activities and reports its findings to the community. The Altamont Landfill operates with complete transparency.
