Since 2009, the Guadalupe Recycling and Disposal Facility has been certified wildlife habitat (Wildlife at Work) site by the national non-profit Wildlife Habitat Council. Working with local, county and state agencies, the facility contributed to the construction of an 800-foot fish ladder in the Guadalupe Creek located within its boundaries. The creek is home to native Steelhead Trout and Chinook Salmon and the ladder is designed to encourage spawning. Its creek is home to Steelhead Trout & Chinook Salmon and its hillsides host a mountain lion, bobcat, wild turkeys, barn owls, deer and a variety of snakes and insects. The facility also welcomes conservation study and research.
In 2018, Guadalupe staff created an award-winning bug hotel from reused materials at the landfill. They competed against entries from around the world and received 1st Place for its Large Sized Bug Hotel and Best Use of Found/Recycled Materials from the Wildlife Habitat Council.
Waste Management has 110 sites nationwide certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council and more than 25,000 acres preserved for wildlife. The Wildlife Habitat Council certifications recognize outstanding native habitat management and environmental education programs developed through partnerships with local organizations
